While serving a suspended sentence for illegal gambling, a young man in Phu Tho province committed a large-scale theft, drawing public attention.
On July 31, the Phu Tho police announced the temporary detention of Nguyen Phuong Nam, 24 years old, residing in Xuan Lang commune, Phu Tho province for investigation on charges of “theft of property.”
According to initial findings, in early April 2025, Nguyen Phuong Nam broke into a phone store in Vinh Phuc Ward (Viet Tri City, Phu Tho Province) and stole 400 iPhone 6 devices along with various accessories.
He later sold the stolen items for VND 22 million (approx. USD 865) and spent the money for personal use.
In mid-July, Nam returned to the same store and stole a computer case, which he sold for VND 9 million (approx. USD 350). All proceeds from both thefts were completely spent.
Notably, at the time of the crimes, Nguyen Phuong Nam was still serving a 10-month suspended sentence handed down on September 11, 2024, by the Ha Hoa District People’s Court for the crime of illegal gambling.
His probationary period was set at 30 months.
