On July 1, 2025, a video went viral on social media showing a foreign tourist angrily confronting a taxi driver who allegedly charged 1.5 million VND (around 60 USD) for a ride of just 2 to 3 kilometers in Hanoi’s old quarter.
Vietnamese detective, according to the video, the foreign guest repeatedly questioned the driver about the excessive fare.
The person who posted the clip said the incident took place in the Old quarter – a popular area among tourists. Notably, the tourist claimed they wanted to pay by card, but the driver insisted on cash only.
Speaking to the press, a representative from the Hoan Kiem district police confirmed they were aware of the situation and had launched an investigation.
“We are reviewing the footage and working to identify the vehicle and driver involved. If any violations are found, we will take strict action,” the official said.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with many expressing concern that such behavior not only breaks the law but also tarnishes Hanoi’s image as a tourist-friendly destination.
